The inner bark of the slippery elm tree contains chemicals that can increase mucous secretion, which may be helpful for stomach and intestinal problems.
Slippery elm bark is a demulcent. Demulcents are soothing in action, as such slippery elm is capable of soothing the lining of the stomach and intestines and reducing irritation. Demulcents are sometimes referred to as mucoprotective agents.
It is also found that the mucilage in slippery elm coats the throat and as such us useful in the case of irritation to these mucous membranes
Slippery elm is also a mild diuretic, it also helps increase the flow of urine and eliminate waste from the body.
